Flu Vaccination 2026: When, Where and Why You Need Your Annual Jab

Looking for a flu vaccination near me in Gloucester? Brookfield Pharmacy in Hucclecote explains when to book, who's eligible for the NHS jab, and how long the protection actually lasts.

Flu Vaccination 2026: When, Where and Why You Need Your Annual Jab

If you've typed "flu vaccination near me" into a search bar at some point in the last week, you're already thinking about it earlier than most. Good. The 2026–27 flu season is the next one we're planning around, and the timing of your jab makes more difference than most people realise. Here's the local picture from Brookfield Pharmacy in Hucclecote — when the vaccine arrives, who gets it free on the NHS, where to go for it, and how long a winter flu shot actually lasts.

Why the 2026 flu season is one to take seriously

After the relatively mild winter we had last year, flu circulation is expected to pick back up. The H3N2 strain — historically harder on older adults — featured heavily in the southern hemisphere season earlier this year, which usually previews what hits the UK from October. The vaccine for 2026–27 has been reformulated to match.

In plain terms: last year's jab won't protect you this year. The strains mutate, the formulation changes, and immunity from a single dose fades over six to nine months. An annual top-up is the whole point.

When to book your flu vaccination

UK flu season runs roughly October to March, peaking December to February. The vaccine takes about two weeks to start working and protection fades over the season. So the ideal timing:

  • Late September to mid-October — the sweet spot. You're covered before the virus is properly circulating, and protection holds through the peak.
  • November — still fine. Plenty of season left to protect against.
  • December and January — better than nothing, and we still vaccinate. Most flu in the UK actually circulates in January and February.

The mistake we see every year is people waiting until "the flu is around." By the time it's obviously around, you've missed two weeks of build-up and may already have been exposed. Book before you need it.

At Brookfield Pharmacy we start vaccinating as soon as the season's stock arrives — usually mid to late September. Book a flu vaccination and we'll see you the same week.

Who gets the flu vaccination free on the NHS

The NHS funds flu vaccinations for groups at higher risk of complications. For 2026–27, this includes:

  • adults aged 65 and over
  • pregnant women at any stage
  • anyone with a long-term health condition: diabetes, asthma on inhalers, COPD, heart disease, chronic kidney or liver disease, neurological conditions including stroke, immunosuppression
  • residents of care homes
  • main carers for an older or disabled person
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • people who live with someone who is immunosuppressed
  • children aged 2 to 17 — usually offered the nasal spray at school

If you're in any of these groups, you can have the jab free of charge at Brookfield Pharmacy. No GP letter needed — just walk in or book.

Where to get a flu vaccination in Hucclecote and Gloucester

Several routes:

  1. Your local pharmacy. For most adults the easiest option. We carry both NHS and private stock at Brookfield Pharmacy, with walk-in availability and online booking from mid-September.
  2. Your GP surgery. Most surgeries run dedicated flu clinics from October. Some are appointment-only.
  3. Workplace clinics. Some employers offer on-site flu jabs; check your HR portal.
  4. School (children 2–17). Most primary and secondary schools run nasal-spray sessions in autumn term.

The advantage of having yours at a pharmacy: no need to fit it around GP opening hours, no appointment juggling, and we can usually do it the same minute you walk in. Brookfield Pharmacy is open Monday to Friday 8:30–18:00 and Saturday 9:00–12:00 — including evenings most people can't get to their GP.

Not eligible for a free jab? The private option

If you're a healthy adult under 65 with no underlying conditions, you're not eligible for the NHS flu vaccination — but you can still have one privately. At Brookfield Pharmacy a private flu jab costs from £15, less than most people spend on a takeaway, and gives the same protection. We'd particularly recommend it if you:

  • live with someone vulnerable
  • work with the public or children
  • can't afford to lose a week of work to flu
  • are travelling over winter

How long does the flu vaccine last?

About six to nine months of strong protection. That's why it's annual, and that's why timing matters — a jab in mid-September will be wearing off by April; a jab in December still has plenty of season left to protect against. It's not lifetime immunity, but it's enough to cover the period when flu actually circulates.

Effectiveness varies by strain match and your age: typically 40–60% reduction in your chance of catching flu, and a much larger reduction in your chance of being hospitalised by it. That second number is the one that matters for over-65s and anyone with a long-term condition.

What happens on the day

A flu vaccination appointment at Brookfield Pharmacy takes under 10 minutes:

  1. Brief screening — current health, allergies, previous reactions, what medicines you're on.
  2. Single injection into the upper arm (or nasal spray for eligible children).
  3. We ask you to stay for 2–3 minutes so we can spot the very rare allergic reaction.

You can drive afterwards, return to work, lift the kids. Some people get a sore arm or mild aches for a day — your immune system learning the strain, not the flu itself.

Combining with a COVID-19 booster

If you're eligible for both flu and the autumn COVID booster, we can usually give them in the same appointment — different arms, no interaction. Saves you a second trip. Ask when you book.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a flu vaccination near me without an appointment?

Walk into Brookfield Pharmacy during opening hours from mid-September onwards. We don't require an appointment for flu jabs — if we're not immediately free we'll book you in for later that day. Call 01452 618377 to check current availability.

Can I have the flu jab if I have a cold?

A mild cold is fine. We'll reschedule if you have a fever or feel significantly unwell — give it a week and come back. Don't avoid it indefinitely on the basis of "but I might catch a cold."

Should I have the flu vaccine if I had flu earlier in the year?

Yes. Flu comes in multiple strains, and having had one doesn't protect you against the others circulating that season.

Is the nasal spray as effective as the injection?

For healthy children aged 2–17, yes — it's the preferred option. For adults, the injectable vaccine is what the evidence supports.

Can my child have it at the pharmacy?

The NHS programme for children 2–17 runs primarily through schools (nasal spray). For children who miss the school session, we can administer the NHS nasal spray vaccination subject to availability — call us first to check.
