NHS App Prescription Nominations: How to Switch Your Pharmacy in 5 Minutes

A step-by-step guide to how to nominate a pharmacy on the NHS app — switch your prescriptions to Brookfield Pharmacy in Hucclecote in under five minutes, no GP call needed.

NHS App Prescription Nominations: How to Switch Your Pharmacy in 5 Minutes

Most people don't realise they can change which pharmacy gets their prescriptions without ringing the GP, queuing at a counter, or filling in a form. If you know how to nominate a pharmacy on the NHS app, you can switch your prescriptions to Brookfield Pharmacy in Hucclecote in about five minutes from your sofa. Here's exactly how — with the why, the catches, and the bits the NHS app doesn't explain clearly.

What a pharmacy nomination actually does

When your GP issues a repeat prescription electronically, it has to go somewhere. Your nominated pharmacy is the one that receives it automatically through the NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). No paper, no collecting a green slip, no choosing a pharmacy each time — the prescription lands with us the moment your GP signs it off.

Nominate Brookfield Pharmacy and every future repeat comes straight to us. We can have it ready before you've put your phone down, and for many patients we'll deliver it free to your door.

How to nominate a pharmacy on the NHS app — step by step

You'll need the NHS App installed and logged in (set up with your NHS login and ID verification). Then:

  1. Open the NHS App and tap into the home screen.
  2. Tap "Prescriptions" (sometimes shown under "Services" or "Health").
  3. Look for "Nominated pharmacy" or "Where you get your medicines".
  4. Tap "Change" (or "Set" if you've never nominated one).
  5. Search for a pharmacy — type Brookfield Pharmacy or our postcode GL3 3HA.
  6. Select Brookfield Pharmacy, 5 Brookfield Road, Hucclecote from the list.
  7. Confirm. That's it — the change is live immediately.

No screenshots required, no GP involvement, no waiting period. Your next repeat prescription will route to us automatically.

For the official walkthrough with screenshots and a how-to video, see the NHS's own guide: Requesting a prescription on the NHS App.

Not using the NHS App? You can also nominate us in person — just ask at the counter or use our nomination page and we'll set it up for you. Same result, takes two minutes.

What if I can't find the "Prescriptions" option?

A few common reasons, and the fixes:

  • Your NHS login isn't fully verified. You need proof-of-identity verification (photo ID step) before prescription features unlock. The app will prompt you.
  • Your GP practice isn't fully linked. Most are, but if prescriptions don't show, your surgery may need to enable online services for your record — a quick call to reception sorts it.
  • You're on an old app version. Update it from the App Store or Google Play.

If it still won't play, pop into Brookfield Pharmacy and we'll do it the old-fashioned way at the counter.

Why nominate Brookfield Pharmacy

Switching your nomination isn't just admin tidiness — it changes how your medicines reach you:

  • Ready when you are. Your repeat arrives electronically and we dispense it ahead of time, so there's rarely a wait.
  • Free local delivery. For housebound, elderly, and many regular patients across Hucclecote and Gloucester, we deliver to your door at no charge.
  • One pharmacy that knows you. When every prescription comes through us, we spot interactions, duplications, and gaps — and we'll flag a medication review when it's due.
  • No more paper chase. No green tokens, no "which pharmacy did I send it to this time."

You can change your nomination as often as you like, and you can have it set differently for one-off prescriptions if you're away from home.

How nomination, EPS and repeat prescriptions fit together

People mix these up, so quickly:

  • EPS (Electronic Prescription Service) is the NHS plumbing that sends prescriptions electronically. Read our full EPS guide.
  • Nomination tells EPS which pharmacy to send them to.
  • Repeat prescription ordering is requesting your next batch — you can do this in the NHS App too, or we can manage your repeats for you.

Set your nomination once, and the other two get a lot smoother.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing my nominated pharmacy cost anything?

No. Nominating or changing a pharmacy is completely free. You only ever pay the standard NHS prescription charge on the medicine itself, if you're not exempt.

Will my GP need to approve the switch?

No. Nomination is entirely your choice and takes effect immediately. Your GP doesn't need to be told and can't override it.

What happens to a prescription that's already at my old pharmacy?

Any prescription issued before you switched stays with the old pharmacy until it's dispensed or expires. The change only affects prescriptions issued from the moment you nominate us onward. If you're mid-cycle, collect the current one as normal — the next one comes to us.

Can I still use other pharmacies if I'm away?

Yes. You can change your nomination temporarily, or your GP can issue a one-off prescription you collect elsewhere. Your standing nomination stays as Brookfield Pharmacy.

How long does the switch take to work?

Immediately. The moment you confirm in the NHS App, your next electronically issued prescription will route to us.
