Same Day Prescription Service: When You Can't Wait

Sometimes a prescription can't wait for the usual 48-hour surgery turnaround. You've run out of your inhaler on a Sunday morning, the antibiotics didn't work and you feel worse than yesterday, or your medicine has been left at home and you're 200 miles away. A same day prescription service exists for exactly these moments — but what it can actually deliver depends on the medicine, the reason, and who's asking. Here's how urgent and same-day prescriptions work at Brookfield Pharmacy in Hucclecote, and the realistic options when time really matters.

What "same day" actually covers

Three different situations get lumped together as "same day prescriptions," and they follow different routes:

1. A GP has issued the prescription today — it's already sat in the NHS Spine electronic prescription service (EPS), and we can dispense within minutes of your GP signing it off. This is the standard flow, not really an "urgent" service — it just happens fast.
2. You need something we can prescribe ourselves as a pharmacist-prescriber — for eligible conditions under Pharmacy First, or in wider circumstances via our private consultation, we can issue the prescription and dispense it in the same visit.
3. You've run out of a regular medicine and can't reach the GP in time — this is the emergency supply provision, which pharmacists have used for years but few people know about.

The right route depends on what you need and why.

Route 1: A GP prescription issued today

If your GP has seen you or spoken to you today and issued a prescription, the electronic prescription service means it's usually with your nominated pharmacy within seconds of them signing. If you've nominated Brookfield Pharmacy, we'll often be picking it and checking it before you've left the surgery car park.

Realistic timings:

• GP issues the prescription → arrives with us: within minutes
• We check, dispense, and bag it: typically 10–30 minutes for straightforward items, longer if we need to phone the surgery to query something or order from the wholesaler
• Ready for collection: usually within the hour for anything routine

For genuinely urgent items, phone us as soon as your GP tells you they've issued it — 01452 618377 — and we'll prioritise it above the queue.

If we don't have stock, we can usually get it in from the wholesaler for the following morning; occasionally same-day if we time it for the next van run. For a genuinely urgent same-day need where we don't have it, we can also transfer the electronic prescription to another pharmacy that does — we'll ring around for you rather than send you back to square one.

Route 2: Pharmacist prescriber same-day

For a growing number of conditions, you don't need to see the GP at all — a pharmacist prescriber can consult, prescribe, and dispense in the same visit.

Free on the NHS under Pharmacy First for:

• Sinusitis (12+), sore throat (5+), earache (1–17), infected insect bites (1+), impetigo (1+), shingles (18+), uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16–64

Private consultation with same-day prescribing available for a wider range of conditions — travel medicines, weight management, some skin conditions, and other cases where clinical criteria are met. Prices are published on the individual services pages.

The time saving is significant: instead of waiting three weeks for a GP appointment, waiting again for the prescription to be issued, then waiting again for us to dispense — you're seen, treated, and walked out with the medicine in one visit under an hour.

Route 3: Emergency supply — when you've run out

Fewer people know this exists. Under UK pharmacy law, we can supply an emergency amount of a regular medicine to a patient who's been previously prescribed it but can't reach the prescriber in time. This covers scenarios like:

• Running out on a bank holiday weekend
• Away from home and left the medicine behind
• Repeat prescription mix-up meaning the item hasn't arrived
• Being caught between GP surgery closures

Two flavours:

• Emergency supply at the request of a prescriber (they ring us, we supply) — no cost, covered by NHS
• Emergency supply at the request of the patient — the pharmacist uses professional judgement to decide whether to supply, and this is a private supply — you pay for it, but it's cheaper than the alternative of not having it

There are legal limits — we can supply enough to bridge you to your next prescription (typically up to 30 days for most medicines, less for controlled drugs and short-course items). Some medicines we can't supply this way at all (controlled drugs schedules 1–3, some others).

• Who prescribes it (GP surgery or specialist)
• When you last had it dispensed and where
• What's happening that means you can't get it the normal way
• Your identification

If we've supplied you before, our records make it faster. If you're new to us, we'll usually need to verify with your usual pharmacy or GP.

When same-day isn't realistic

Some situations that people hope are "same day" but can't be:

• A medicine you've never had before for a condition we can't prescribe under Pharmacy First. You need the GP, or our private consultation service if it's something we can cover.
• A controlled drug at short notice. Most schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs need a written prescription signed by the prescriber. Emergency supply is very limited.
• Something the surgery hasn't issued yet and can't reach today. No prescription = no dispensing, whoever you are.
• A quantity larger than the emergency supply limit.
• After 6pm on a weekday or after 12pm on Saturday, without prior arrangement. We're not open, and other local pharmacies may have shorter hours than they used to.

For anything urgent outside our hours, NHS 111 is the right first call — they'll direct you to the nearest open pharmacy, urgent treatment centre, or A&E depending on what you need.

Making the whole thing faster (the boring but effective bit)

Most "same day" panics could be avoided with three small setup steps:

1. Nominate Brookfield Pharmacy on the NHS App — it takes five minutes. This means every prescription arrives with us the second your GP signs it.
2. Set up managed repeats with us — we order from your GP when your medicine's due, so it never runs out unexpectedly. Ask at the counter or see our repeat prescription service page.
3. Order your repeat 5–7 days before you run out, not the day of. This is the single most useful habit for anyone on long-term medicine.

None of this is glamorous. It's what keeps the "urgent" out of urgent prescriptions.

Cost of an urgent prescription

• NHS prescription (same-day GP-issued item): standard NHS charge if you pay it, free if you're exempt. No fee for the speed.
• Pharmacy First consultation: free NHS service; medicine at standard charge or free if exempt.
• Private pharmacist-prescriber consultation: consultation and treatment prices published on the relevant service page. Same-day service is included, not extra.
• Emergency supply at patient request: private supply — you pay for the medicine at cost-plus-dispensing fee. Typically a small charge for a few days' worth of a common medicine; more for specialist items.
• Delivery on same day: free for many patients across Hucclecote and Gloucester areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I collect a same-day prescription for someone else?

Yes, with their permission and ideally their ID or a note. For controlled drugs, some ID is required and we'll ask more questions.

Can I get an emergency supply of my inhaler on a Sunday?

We're closed Sunday, but NHS 111 will direct you to the nearest open pharmacy. On a Saturday morning during our hours, yes — bring an old box or your NHS number and we'll assess.

What if I need something we don't have in stock?

We'll either order it in (usually next morning, sometimes same day for a second van run) or ring round nearby pharmacies to find it and transfer the electronic prescription. You won't need to start over.

Is there a same-day service for repeat prescriptions?

If you order your repeat by mid-morning and your GP signs it that day, yes — often ready the same afternoon. If you leave it to the last minute, no promises. Nominate us and use the NHS App to make this frictionless.

How do I know if my medicine is available under emergency supply?

What about controlled drugs?

Most controlled drugs are limited or excluded from emergency supply. If you're on a regular controlled drug, don't leave repeats to the last minute — they take longer to issue and can't be rushed the same way.
